A bit about me

Dr John Sykes B.Sc, MBBS, MRCGP, FASLM

I’m passionate about empowering individuals to feels healthier and happier in their day to day lives. I believe in the power of Lifestyle Medicine to address underlying causes of disease and transform peoples habits using evidenced-based methods to reduce the burden of disease, prevent disease and in some cases reverse disease. I understand that change is not easy and involves many obstacles but I believe that guided by the right knowledge and the right support great changes can be made to better one's health.

I love working as a General Practitioner who utilises his passion for Lifestyle Medicine and Nutrition to complement my practice. I strongly believe that this involves being an expert in general medicine as well as attempting to tackle the root cause of medical issues.

I have a particular interest in Behaviour Change, Mental Health, Diabetes, Obesity Management, Hypertension, Nutrition, Men's Health, Prevention Medicine and Elderly Care Medicine.

My passion stems from an appreciation of lifestyle from patient experiences and his own. I enjoy being active daily with a mixture of running, football and gym-based fitness. I also enjoy cooking at home and occasionally in Sydney’s amazing restaurants. I have been very lucky to live in this amazing country and love exploring Australia's incredible sights and scenery.

Background

I’m a GP who trained in the UK and I’m currently working in Sydney Australia. I’m a Trustee and Director of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine and a Fellow of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine (FSLM). I gained a distinction in “Mac Nutrition Universal” which gives him the title of a certified nutritionist. I currently work in Vitalis Family Medical Practice in Kirrawee Sydney in which I work as a GP and run a Lifestyle Medicine Clinic.

I started my training by completing a degree in Cell Biology (B.Sc) at the University of Durham and then went on to complete my degree in Medicine (MBBS) at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. I completed my GP training in Bath under Severn Deanery (MRCGP) in which I was awarded with the GP Trainee Central Leadership Scholar role and I served as the GP Trainee Committee Chairman. I’ve now organised 4 national medical conferences on Lifestyle Medicine including the inaugural RCGP Lifestyle Medicine Conference in June 2017 which won the local “Vibrant Faculty Award 2017” in Severn deanery.

I have worked in public health in Wiltshire Council during my medical training and I’ve undertaken many projects within my training on lifestyle medicine, including a GP education program for GPs in Wiltshire on the benefits of physical activity and a pedometer study in one GP practice in Bath that won the “RCGP Bright Ideas Highly Commended” Award in 2017. I had previous roles as a Director of “Move Eat Treat” which won national prizes.
